Nashua woman charged with DUI after crashing into Bedford tolls
BEDFORD – Jane Powell, 39, of Nashua, was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence after she reportedly crashed her Ford Ranger pickup truck into the Bedford Toll Plaza on July 26.
According to State Police, troopers responded to the southbound side of the F.E. Everett Turnpike at 5:07 p.m. and found the vehicle with “severe disabling damage.”
Upon arrival, police reported that Powell had exited the vehicle. She was later taken to Elliot Hospital in Manchester where she was treated for minor injuries.
The preliminary investigation suggested that Powell crossed over a concrete divider before smashing into the tollbooth’s concrete enclosure.
No one working at the toll plaza was injured.
Two E-ZPass lanes were closed for approximately 90 minutes to allow for further investigation and debris removal. A third lane also remained closed on July 27.
According to police, Powell has been charged with reckless conduct in addition to DUI.
Under state law, if convicted, Powell could face up to one year in prison, a license suspension of up to two years and a $620 fine.
This is the third time this year that a driver has crashed into the toll plaza.
On June 13, Scott Defreitas, 52, of Nashua, died when his Mercedes SL 500 burst into flames after colliding with a concrete barrier.
Less than one week later, three people were injured when a Ford F-250 pickup truck, driven by Scott Wein, 48, of Loudon, reportedly crossed over the median and into oncoming traffic. According to police, Wein struck the tollbooth and a BMW X-3 in a head on collision.
As part of its 10-year plan, the state Department of Transportation expects to have the Bedford Toll Plaza removed by 2026 and replaced with electronic tolling.
