MERRIMACK — Thomas Bemis, 35, of Merrimack, was taken into custody on the evening of Sept. 19 following a two-car crash with injuries in the area of Bedford Road and Daniel Webster Highway.

According to the Merrimack Police Department, officers responded to the scene at 7:58 p.m. The other individuals involved in the crash and the extent of their injuries have not been released.

While speaking with Bemis, officers observed signs of intoxication and conducted a series of field sobriety tests. He was then placed under arrest for operating under the influence of liquor.

Officers also allegedly found a “large quantity of a controlled drug” near Bemis’ vehicle. The specific name of the drug has not been released.

In addition to OUIL, Bemis is charged with an open container violation, falsifying physical evidence and possession of a controlled drug with intent to sell.

Bemis was later released on personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to appear in Merrimack District Court on Oct. 8.

Under state law, if convicted, Bemis could face up to 14 years in prison, up to seven years probation, up to $106,000 in fines and having his driver’s license suspended for at least five years.

Court records indicate that in June 2017, Bemis was arrested in Manchester for driving under the influence and possession of a controlled drug. He was arrested again in Gilford in March 2019 for driving under the influence.
