Body of missing Nashua woman found in Massachusetts pond

WESTFORD, Mass. – The body of Margaret Hammersley, 73, of Nashua, was found in Forge Pond in Westford, Mass. on the afternoon of March 21, one day after her family reported her missing.

According to the Westford Police Department, Hammersley’s vehicle was found unoccupied in a nearby parking lot. It remains unclear as to what drew her to the Westford pond.

The search efforts included up to 20 police dogs, drones, boats and rescue teams scouring the water and the shoreline. According to Massachsuetts Paddler, the 203-acre pond has a depth transparency of four feet. It has a maximum depth of 37 feet and an average depth of 15 feet.

Authorities spent four hours looking for Hammersley on March 20 and resumed the search at 8 a.m. the following morning.

Hammersley’s body was ultimately discovered in the water on the western side of the pond at 1:05 p.m. on March 21, according to police.

Although the incident remains under investigation, police do not suspect foul play.

According to her obituary, Hammersley was born in Lowell, Mass on March 8, 1952. She graduated from Saint Ann High School in Arlington, Mass. in 1971 and went on to work for Wang Laboratories and Continental Resources.
