Pappas, Kuster reintroduce legislation to protect US strategic petroleum reserves from foreign adversaries
WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas (NH-01) and U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster (NH-02) joined Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06) and Congressman Don Bacon (NE-02) in reintroducing the bipartisan Banning Oil Exports to Foreign Adversaries Act for the 118th Congress. This bill would ban China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and other sanctioned nations from purchasing oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserves; it is the most bipartisan and comprehensive policy solution put forward on this national security issue.
“Our main priority must be ensuring that our oil reserves remain sufficient for American families’ needs, including being affordable and keeping them warm and safe,” said Congressman Pappas. “This commonsense legislation will close the loophole currently allowing oil from our Strategic Petroleum Reserves to be sold to foreign adversaries and prioritize lowering costs for Americans at home. As winter energy costs and gas prices continue to be too high for Granite Staters, I remain committed to lowering energy costs and urge the House to swiftly pass this legislation.”
“The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is a critical emergency resource to protect American families and businesses,” said Congresswoman Kuster, a senior Member of the Energy and Commerce Committee. “We should not be selling energy from this emergency reserve to our foreign adversaries. I was proud to once again support this bipartisan legislation to ensure we do not allow any nation that wishes harm to our country or our allies access to these resources.”
