HINSDALE — A local man most recently of 767 Plain Road shot and killed his 12-year-old son before turning the gun on himself, according to Attorney General John Formella.

Tyler Gilbert was visiting his father, David Lent, 47, and his grandparents at the residence at the time of the incident, which police said was reported just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

A witness at the home, whom police didn’t identify, told responding officers that Lent shot Tyler before shooting himself.

A pistol was located next to Lent, police said, adding that officers observed both he and Tyler had sustained apparent gunshot wounds.

Tyler had been living in Vermont, and had traveled to Hinsdale for a visit, police added. They didn’t say who Tyler was living with or name the Vermont town.

Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Mitchell Weinberg, who performed autopsies on Lent and Tyler, determined that the boy died of gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.

Lent sustained a single gunshot wound, according to Weinberg, who ruled his death a suicide.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help Tyler’s family with funeral expenses. Go to

The incident comes just over two years after a man and woman were found shot to death in a residence, also on Plain Road.

Police and the Attorney General’s office said at the time that Hinsdale officers were called to 240 Plain Road the afternoon of April 11, 2019, to check the welfare of a person or persons at the residence.

Upon entering, the officers discovered the bodies of Neal Bolster, 29, and Aaliyah Jacobs, 19, officials said.

An autopsy determined both died of gunshot wounds and were victims of homicide.

Within hours, Hinsdale police issued warrants for the arrest of Derrick Shippee, 28, of Vernon, Vermont, in connection with the shootings.

The next day, Shippee was found dead of a drug overdose at the home of a relative in Vernon.
