Rollover crash on I-93 sends four to hospital with serious injuries
WINDHAM — Four people believed to be from Massachusetts sustained serious injuries when the vehicle in which they were traveling left the northbound lanes of I-93 and rolled over several times.
Whether the occupants, who have yet to be identified by police, were wearing seat belts is unknown, but all four were reportedly ejected from the vehicle — along with numerous items — before the vehicle came to rest on a grassy area just off the highway.
First responders from Windham and Derry, along with state police troopers, arrived at the scene, which was at milemarker 5.0 just south of Exit 3, to find four people lying on the ground near where the vehicle came to rest.
A preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle, a Kia Sorento, was traveling in the far left lane when it veered to the right, crossed all the lanes then rolled over as it left the right lane.
The occupants were transported to hospitals in New Hampshire and Massachusetts with what were described as serious, and potentially life-threatening, injuries.
That the crash occurred at the beginning of the Friday afternoon rush hour caused traffic to back up for miles after police closed two right lanes on the northbound side of the interstate to allow troopers to conduct their on-scene investigation.
Troopers remained at the scene for several hours, taking measurements and utilizing a drone to document the scene, which was spread over a wide area.
Any updates received from police will be posted as they are made available.
