Nick R. Long
It’s not a hole in one this time… as golfer, amateur artist, TV movie fan, passed away on December 4, 2024, at the Hospice House in Merrimack, NH. He loved doing jigsaw puzzles, geography through interest in coins, nature and creatures of all kinds. Nick was loyal to his sports teams: Chicago Bears, Celtics, Los Angeles Dodgers, and he loved college football and basketball. Go Big Ten!! He recently became interested, like many of us in women’s sports, at college and professional levels. As he had more free time, he would watch other sports and ME TV and Sci- Fi.
Nick was born in Burlington, Iowa on December 5, 1942 to Clem Q Long and Gladys Purkey Long originally from eastern Tennessee. His sister, Anne McCormally and husband Kevin McCormally live in Washington D.C. Anne and Nick were close siblings who were just three years apart. Nick was married to his wife Nancy Setterberg Long for 59 years. Since Nick and Nancy were not blessed with their own children, they loved their families even more.
Nieces and nephews preceding Nick in death were: Craig Savastano and Kathy Savastano Malisewski from Tucson, AZ, and Patrick Henry McCormally, his godson from Baltimore, MD. Both sets of Nick and Nancy’s parents and several of his wife’s siblings preceded him in death.
Living family members include brother-in-law Don and Marge Setterberg of Ames, Iowa; Nieces Niamh McCormally Hopper and husband Andy Hopper of Baltimore, MD and their two children Saoirse and Ewan Hawkeye Hopper.; niece in law Niki McCormally and two children Rumi and Seamus of Baltimore MD. Nieces Vickie Setterberg and Stacy Setterberg of Ames, IA and Stacy’s
two daughters, Skylar Pattee Morgan and husband Morgan Rippke with two children and Shaela Hunziker and husband Shane Morgan and their six children. Nephew Mark Setterberg and wife Ann and their daughter Allison of Houston, TX and nephew Chris Savastano and his wife Kim with their two children Roman and Sienna.
Near and dear to Nick were his friends from two golf leagues and former mini golf co-owners Dave Fairbanks and Steve Fairbanks from Stillwater, OK. It was a partnership with Nick and Nancy Long included. Wives Kathy Fairbanks and deceased Carol Fairbanks made up the rest of the group. Many stories to be told by golfer friends, I’m sure especially from his personal foursome, you know who you are! Snowbirds from Myrtle Beach were also special friends and Nick and Nancy Long thoroughly enjoyed the beach and the Snowbird activities as well as North Myrtle Beach UMC. Picture Nick acting as a horse at one of those games.
Nick was always ready to help with church events at Main St. UMC in Nashua, NH. At church yard sales, he was there testing the electronic equipment and using his humor to sell items. Nick and Nancy hosted Joyful Shepherd’s events at their home and Nick was grillmaster with different buddies like dearest friend Roger Hall and Barry LeBlanc. At the Joyful Christmas parties, Roger and Nick would hide in the kitchen pretending to cook, which they actually did. Any kind of church activity that Nancy was involved in, he assisted with Roger Hall and Joyce Tagliaferro. Nick was quite the artist, and his paintings are enjoyed in the homes of many people in the words of Pam Breniser.
Nick worked as an electrical technician and engineer and has several patented awards given to several groups he worked with at Bull INC in Billerica, MA. Many friends were made there and in all of his activities. Family and friends say he was a wonderful man and his wife agrees.
Donations in Nick’s memory may be given if you wish to Main St. UMC, PO Box 1517 Nashua, NH 03061 or to the Community Hospice House 210 Naticook Rd Merrimack, NH 03054 or donate at wake or funeral and small donations do make a difference to both of these groups helping those who need it.
