Matthew Francis Judge

Matthew Francis Judge, Korean War Veteran and longtime NH resident, passed away January 16, 2019, at the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Jaffrey, NH, surrounded by family. Born October 21, 1934 in Swampscott, MA, to the late Lt. Colonel Bernard Judge, US Army, Ret. & the late Catherine (Romanowicz) Judge, of Peabody, MA, he attended Peabody schools & graduated from St. John’s Preparatory High School in Danvers, MA, in 1952. Mr. Judge joined the U. S. Army in 1952. Deployed to Korea during the Korean War, he served with G Company & HHC, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7ID. He fought during the Second Battle of Pork Chop Hill and was later promoted to Sergeant First Class while on active duty. During his active duty time, he served at Fort Chafee, AR, Fort Sill, OK, Fort Lewis, WA, Fort Ord, CA and Fort Bragg, NC. After leaving active duty, he transferred to the Massachusetts Army National Guard, later commissioning as a Second Lieutenant of Artillery with 102FA, 26ID. Mr. Judge earned a BA in Business from Boston College and a Master’s in Education from Salem State College. He then began a long career as an independent salesman of educational materials. After retiring from educational sales, he worked for the U. S. Postal Service in Nashua, retiring again in 2013. In 1961, Mr. Judge married Janice Marie Calder, daughter of the late Daniel & the late Mary (McCarthy) Calder, of Peabody, MA. They had three children together: Matthew Francis, Jr. in February 1962, Mark Bernard in December 1963, who passed away in April 1964 and Daniel Calder in August 1972. They lived in several parts of the region until settling in Amherst, NH in 1971, where they lived for more than 45 years. Mr. Judge enjoyed Manchester Monarchs hockey games and reading current events & history. In later years, he greatly enjoyed the annual reunions of the 17th Infantry Regimental Association that were held throughout the country. He was a life member of the Association. Mr. Judge was survived by his wife of 57 years, Janice who passed in November 2024, son Matthew, Jr. of Amherst, NH, son Daniel, daughter-in-law Bethany (Popham) Judge & granddaughter Isabella Caruso, of Tyngsborough, MA, former daughter-in-law Jennifer (Powers) Judge & grandson Christopher Judge of Londonderry, NH, granddaughter Angela Addington, a sister and brother-in-law, Charles & Janice (Judge) Fox, brother-in-law and sister-in-law George & Carole (Calder) Caley and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Mark Bernard Judge, sister Joy (Judge) Clark and sister and brother-in-law William & Maureen (Judge) Reinstein.
SERVICES: A joint wake for Mr. and Mrs. Judge will be held Friday, May 2, 2025 from 10:00AM to 12:00PM at Phaneuf Funeral Home, 26 Kinsley Street, Nashua, NH, followed by their burial at 12:30PM at St. Stanislaus Cemetery, 61 Pine Hill Rd, Nashua, NH. It was their wish to be buried at the same time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude’s Hospital, Shriners Hospitals or Toys for Tots.
