HS Roundup: Broncos’ drought is over; Milford girls 5-0

The regular season drought is over for the Alvirne High School boys basketball team.

The Broncos topped Merrimack for their first win that counts in the standings after starting the Division I campaign at 0-5. Last week they did capture the Lowell (Mass.) Catholic Holiday Tournament, so things are looking up.

Meanwhile, in girls hoop, Milford remained unbeaten with a win at Lebanon. There was one postponement on Friday, as Nashua South at Trinity has been rescheduled for Feb. 13.

Here’s your Friday night fun:

BOYS BASKETBALL

ALVIRNE 65, MERRIMACK 50

Sam DeWitt had 15 points for the Broncos, going 11 of 12 from the line in the second half. Garrett Hall had eight points and played well defensively, and the Broncos had 10 players in the scoring column.

Merrimack was paced by David Roy with 15 points while Mike Flera added nine.

Alvirne (1-5, 3-5 overall) is at Winnacunnet on Tuesday while Merrimack (3-3) visits Spaulding.

PINKERTON 58, BISHOP GUERTIN 47

The Cardinals (3-2) fall to the Astros Friday night. Luke Anderson scored 21 points in the loss. BG hosts Manchester Memorial on January 13.

CAMPBELL 67, PROSPECT MOUNTAIN 34

The Cougars improve to 5-2 with a dominant win on the road. Austin McHugh (16 points, eight rebounds), Colton Martel (15 points, nine assists) and Tucker Matthews (13 points) led the offensive output for the locals. Campbell hosts Conant on Monday.

MILFORD 58, LEBANON 33

Brady Hansen netted 24 points from behind the arc to lead the Spartans (3-1) in a shootout. Chuck Urda scored 18 points and Kai Lau Quan knocked down five three-pointers for 15 points. Milford visits Hollis Brookline on Tuesday.

SOUHEGAN 50, LACONIA 42

Matt Canavan scores 15 points to lead the Sabers (4-0) to another win. Sean McCool added eight points and Carter Hayes grabbed 11 rebounds. Souhegan hosts ConVal on Tuesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

ALVIRNE 53, MERRIMACK 33

After a tough loss at the beginning of the week, the Broncos (2-4) bounce back with a big win over the Tomahawks (2-4). Ally Scharn had a game high 20 points with Lexi Lloyd adding 12 and Paige McKinley scoring seven for Alvirne.

Maddison McCaffery led Merrimack with 16 points and Kylie Flynn had a great defensive effort. Alvirne hosts Winnacunnet and Merrimack hosts Spaulding on Tuesday.

MILFORD 58, LEBANON 34

The Spartans (5-0) showed their offensive prowess on the road Friday night in Lebanon. Avery Fuller (14 points), Lulu Maguire (13 points) and Claire Cote (12 points) paced Milford; while Bailey Johnson added nine points and Kate Hansen collected four points and nine rebounds. Milford hosts Hollis Brookline on Tuesday. 

KENNETT 50, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 45

The Cavaliers (4-2) held a 43-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but their shooting hands cooled down and couldn’t finish it off.

Camryn Dunn led the team with 15 points, Cheyenne Colbert had 10, Daniella Allanach scored eight, McKenna Dunn had eight and Eva Kelley ended the game with six. HB visits Milford on Tuesday.
