TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. — For some, the wait was excruciating.

For others, it was almost seen as a good thing.

But either way, the No. 3 Bishop Guretin High School boys hockey team passed its first tourney test with flying green and gold colors, blanking No. 11 Pinkerton Academy, 6-0 at Skate 3 Arena.

Remember, the Cards had a first-round bye and then had this game postponed thanks to Saturday’s storm, and hadn’t played in 10 days.

“We definitely had to wait awhile,” Guertin’s Logan Vogel, who had two goals, said. “But I think that helped us because we could get more practice in, we could watch film of them, just get more focused for this game.”

The Cards also got a pair of goals from James Mantone, a goal and an assist from Cosmo Siano, a goal from Devin Young and two assists from Tim Kiely to lead an attack that had Guertin constantly on Astros goalie Damien Carter’s doorstep.

And if you’re Cards coach Gary Bishop, his team executed the game plan perfectly.

“We hadn’t played in nine days,” Bishop said. “We practiced yesterday and that’s all we spent time on, 3 on 3, down low, going at the net, crash the net, do what you have to do in the corner. It paid off in the second and third periods.”

Vogel opened the scoring, deflecting a Tim Kiely shot at 2:58 of the first period. But that was it, until BG got three in the second to lead 4-0 and the outcome really wasn’t in doubt.

“We got two goals from the first line, two from the second line and two from the third,” Bishop said. “It’s about time we got past the quarters.”

The bitter taste of last year’s quarterfinal loss to Bedford had still been hanging over this team, but now the Cards get to watch No. 1 Concord and No. 4 Bedford duke it out Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Manchester’s JFK Coliseum before they take on No. 7 Londonderry at 7:30 for a chance to get back to their first title game since 2016.

Bishop felt that his team handled the break well, and was glad the game was rescheduled for a school day.

“Mentally, I thought we were better off,” he said. “The kids were in school today. It was miserable all last week (during vacation) trying to get them on time, focused, ready to go. Today we were better off.”

After the first period, Bishop told the Cards to keep shooting on Carter and grab a rebound goal. Mantone took that one better by somehow stuffing the puck past Carter at 2:25 of the second for a 2-0 lead. Colin Roark got the assist.

Two minutes later, Devin Young was wide open just over the blue line and Cosmo Siano found him. Young completed the play with a wrister that beat Carter to make it 3-0, and Vogel added his second with 41 seconds left in the period.

Pinkerton’s Jack Doherty tried to rally his 8-11 team but Cards netminder Brayden King (16 saves) was having none of it. Game over.

And next it’s the Astros’ chief rival, the 12-8 Lancers, who have won six of their last seven, including a 3-2 prelim win over Hanover and a 2-1 quarter upset over No. 2 Windham. Oh, and the streak started with a 4-3 win over the Cards a month ago.

Not to worry, the players say.

“We’re a good team, we’ve got a lot of seniors,” Vogel said. “I think we can pull it off.”
