HS Roundup: Good day for South teams; Broncos fall to PA

Saturday was a good sports day for Nashua High School South as the field hockey team got its first win of the season and also the boys cross country team captured the Souhegan Relays.

Meawhile, what a difference a week makes for the Alvirne High School football team, and not in a good way. Here’s a look:

FOOTBALL

PINKERTON 51, ALVIRNE 6

Aiden Mills scored the Broncos’ lone TD on a 67-yard run. It was 21-0 Astros after one quarter and 38-6 at halftime.

“Pinkerton was bigger, faster,stronger,” Alvirne coach Matt Lee said. “Very difficult opponent as we look to build our football program.”

Alvirne has its home opener this Friday night vs. Windham.

CAMPBELL 42, KINGSWOOD 6

It was a day for the Cougars to run and run some more as Scott Hershberger had 184 yards and four TDs on 10 carries, while Logan Daigle rushed for 40 yards and a score. The game was called late in the third quarter after a Kingswood player was injured and carted off,but word was he is ok and the move was precautionary.

Now 2-0, Campbell will host Stevens for its home opener next Saturday morning.

BISHOP GUERTIN GAME AT MAINE HALTED (Friday)

The Cards game at Scarborough, Me. was halted due to weather Friday night after a half with Guertin leading 13-10.

Mike MacDonough threw two TD passes, one to Will Helmke of 49 yards and another 3-yarder to Connor Lennon. He had 126 yards throwing in the first half.

According to BG coach Anthony Nalen, there have been discussions of continuing the game on Monday in Maine but no decision as of late yesterday had been reached.

FIELD HOCKEY

BISHOP GUERIN 4, NASHUA NORTH 0

Sophie Bilodeau had two goals while Addison Daddona and Emily Vincinguerra each had a goal as the Cards improved to 3-1.

Assists went to Taylor Guibord, Jordan Gaebel and Hailey LeBlanc.

North, however, played fairly well compared to past years vs. the Cards, holding BG off in three of four quarters. Abby O’Malley played well in goal for the Titans, while Jordin Lopez was leading North’s offensive push.

BG hosts Keene on Monday while North (0-4) is at Concord.

NASHUA SOUTH 1, MANCHESTER CENTRL-WEST 0

Saige Devins scored early in the first quarter off a pass from Keegan Dolan and that was all the Panthers (1-4) needed to get their first win of the season.

Playing well for South were Karina O’Donnell, Erin Flaherty, Maren Lowell, Wylie Hart and Emily Richard, as well as goalie Xiadani DeLaLima (11 saves).

South hosts Timberlane on Monday at the Fran Tate Track infield on South’s campus.

CROSS COUNTRY

NASHUA SOUTH BOYS WIN SOUHEGAN RELAYS, NORTH GIRLS THIRD

The Panthers had an amazing score of 6 taking the top three relay team spots to win the event at Freestyle Farms in Amherst.

Souhegan was next, taking spots 4-9-10 for 23 points while BG was third at 26 (5-7-14).

Merrimack was the other local team, finishing sixth 41.

As a relay event, multiple runners combined for one spot. South had Dante Castella (13:37), Camdor Brien (14:26), and Micah Allard (15:19) in the group that finished first overall. Ryan DuVarney, Josh Mathson and Dan Byrne (team best 13:30 time) were in the group that finished second and Cameron Patronick, Vedanth Penumatsa and Andrew Byrne were in the group that were third overall, the 1-2-3 in groups giving the Panthers their six points.

In the girls event, Nashua North was third with 23 points behind second place Keene (18) and winner Pinkerton (14).

Souhegan was fourth (39), Merrimack sixth (49) and Nashua South eighth (58).

NORTH BOYS FIFTH AT MOUNT WASHINGTON

The Titans were fifth at 152, behind fourth place Concord (139). St. Johnsbury (Vt.) Academy was first with 32 points, followed by Pinkerton (41) and Hanover (110).

Cole Burns was 11th to lead North in 18:00.56, followed by Gavin Sachecki in 26th (18:59.13), James Campbell in 36th. (19:19.56) and Nate D’Silva (38th, 19:23.06). Owen Gagnon was the fifth Titan scorer in 46th.
