Football Roundup: Alvirne, Campbell roll, Souhegan upset
Three local teams hit the road on Friday night, and all three had games that were significant.
Two had happy bus rides home, Alvirne and Campbell. The third was stunned, as Souhegan was upset in Plaistow.
Here’s what happened:
ALVIRNE 36, MALDEN (Mass.) 13
The visiting Broncos jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and never looked back, leading 30-0 at the half to snap a two-game skid.
Aidan Mills had two TDs of 70 and 15 yards. QB Sean Boudreau had a 1-yard scoring run, while Jonavan Santana added a 16-yard run.
The Broncos scored on defense, too, as Cam Porter recovered a fumble in the end zone. Oh, and they also had a safety on a muffed punt.
Alvirne (2-2 overall, 1-2 in Division I) gets back into in-state play, hosting fellow Central Conference opponent Salem next Friday.
CAMPBELL 36, INTER-LAKES/MOULTONBOROUGH 0
Scott Hershberger’s memorable junior season continued as he rushed for 212 yards and four TDs on 13 carries, and he also had an interception.
His brother Nick also had a good night, rushing for 22 yards and a TD on just four carries, also with an interception.
Now 4-0, Campbell prepares for its showdown with fellow unbeaten Trinty next Friday night in Litchfield, a rematch of last year’s memorable Division III title game.
TIMBERLANE 21, SOUHEGAN 20
The stunner of the season thus far, as former Division II champ but now current Division I team Timberlane rallied from being down twice by two TDs.
The Sabers went into the game having outscored its Division II opponents 145-0, and scored on its first two possessions with QB Romy Jain throwing for one TD to J.J. Bright of 56 yards and running for another for a 14-0 lead.
Garrett Shivell’s 13-yard TD reception a minute into the second quarter ended the Sabers’ shutout streak of 136: 51, and after Jain threw his second TD pass, this time to Cole Manning (15 yards), Souhegan was up 20-7 with 4:13 left in the first half.
But the PAT kick was blocked, and that proved to be the eventual difference. Timberlane got an Eddie DiGiulio 6-yard TD before the half and Jeremy Mlocek hit Jake Basnett with a 12-yard pass with 8:43 left in the third quarter to tie it. The PAT kick gave the Owls a 21-20 lead.
That margin held up as Souhegan, which had 228 total yards in the first half, had only 81 in the second half and Jain was intercepted on Souhegan’s final possession.
Now 3-1, the Sabers return to Division II play next Friday at home vs. Plymouth.
