NASHUA – When the ball would drift her way to the outside, the Bishop Guertin High School student fans would simply yell “Boom!” on Monday night at the Colligadome.
And that’s because the Cardinals’ senior outside hitter Akira Coravos meant business in the match vs. city rival Nashua South. And it was fitting that Coravos thunderous hit cut a Panther rally short with the clinching point of a 3-0 BG win.
“Akira was unbelievable, she’s been a catalys for us,” Guertin coach Kyle Clement said after his team’s 25-17, 26-24, 25-21 sweep. “When she gets that set that she wants, very few people are going to be able to stop her.”
Coravos led the Cards in kills, and South simply had no answer.
“Akira’s a good player, she is a really good player,” South coach Tom Langer said. “She is definitely an All-State caliber player. She stood up tonight and did really well.”
Guertin, now 6-2, was looking to bounce back after falling to Londonderry on Friday in a mild surprise.
“It was great to get back on the right track,” Clement said. “They (South) put up a great fight. We’ve been injured so it was good to get back on the right track, I’m very happy with that.”
BG got Brooke Partridge back for the middle; she had been out a couple of weeks, and was “a huge difference maker” in Clement’s mind. Veronica Gomez manned the back line defensively, while Allison Marino played well defensively in the middle as well.
South (6-3) was led by Mia Suljic’s eight kills, 10 digs and three aces, while Riley Landsteiner had 10 digs and an ace. Langer hates the match after the Battle of the Bridge with North, and you could tell why on Monday night.
“We came out flat,” Langer said. “It’s a game of momentum at that point. And I think you saw at one point, a couple little mistakes kind of rolled into five, six points (for BG).”
“That’s all right, we’ve got another one (tonight at home vs. Exeter), so we’ll go get ’em.”
Guertin grabbed the first set by eight points, but were down 24-23 in the second set, but got the next three points, the go-ahead on a Partridge hit and the clincher on a solid block by the tandem of Coravos and Marino for the 26-24 win.

In the third set, the hungry Cards were set to get out early up 21-11. But the Panthers, to their credit, rallied to close it to 23-21 before Partridge and then, of course, Coravos closed it out.
“It’s tough to simulate that in practice, the pressure and everything,” Clement said. “But we try to do the best we can.”
Clement laughed when he was told that the wins over North earlier in the season and now South mean that the Cards now own the city. But there’s loftier goals.
“They’ve set the expectations of where they want to be, and I think right now they’ve shown we’re pretty much a top four team,” he said. “But they’re not settling for that, they want more. And I love it.”
