The Souhegan High School football team left Calvetti Field in Amherst after losing by a touchdown in overtime to a powerful Plymouth team feeling it was a game it could have won.

Thus, the Sabers had plenty of confidence when they headed up to Plymouth for Saturday’s semifinals and they came away with a resounding 36-7 victory over the previously unbeaten Bobcats.

As a result, the No. 4 Sabers (9-2) will meet No. 2 Pelham (10-1) in the Division II title game next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pinkerton Academy. It will be the second time in three years that the two will meet in the finals.

No one could have been more confident than Sabers junior quarterback Michael Fiengo, who ran for two TDs and threw for three others in the one-sided win.

The thinking for the Sabers was Fiengo came of age when he led Souhegan down the field for a game tying TD late in the first meeting, sending things to OT.

This time, after Plymouth had struck first on a Luke Diamond fourth-and-4 15-yard TD pass to Jaxon Rineer for a 7-0 lead, it was all Fiengo and Souhegan thereafter. He ran 99 yards to help tie the game up at 7 and with 4:21 left in the first half hit Brody Smith on a seam rout e for a 55-yard TD to give the Sabers the lead for good, 14-7.

The Bobcats (10-1) then fumbled the ball away and, well, Fiengo took full advantage, running in from 9 yards out to give Souhegan a 21-7 halftime advantage. He had another rushing TD early in the third quarter to make it 27-7, and he fired his third TD pass of the day, this one to Brayden Hickman, to complete the road blowout shocker.

Souhegan will try to avenge a 40-26 loss at home to the Pythons back on Oct. 25. And, for Saber seniors, they no doubt will remember Pelham’s 35-6 win in the 2022 Division II finals.

This will be Souhegan’s third final in the last five years. They downed Plymouth 26-21 in the 2020 championship game.
