It’s Championship Week for Souhegan, Campbell football
And then there were two.
That’s all what’s left locally in the high school football season, as the Souhegan Sabers and Campbell Cougars are the only area teams with practices this week, and they’ll be gearing up to try to win championships.
Souhegan blew away Plymouth 36-7 Saturday at Plymouth, the No. 4 Sabers stunning the previously unbeaten, No.1 Bobcats in the Division II semifinals.
As a result, the Sabers (9-2) will take on No. 2 10-1 Pelham for the Division II championship this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pinkerton Academy in Derry. Pelham beat Trinity 47-21 in their semifinal this past Friday.
In Division III, Campbell will be playing in its third straight title game. The No. 1, 10-0 Cougars will take on No. 3 Inter-Lakes-Moultonborough (9-1) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at, ironically, Souhegan’s Calvetti Field. The Cougars won it all in 2022 beating Trinity, but lost the Pioneers in 2023. Then Trinity moved up to Division II this season.
SOUHEGAN VS. PELHAM
The Sabers lost to the Pythons 40-26 back on Oct. 25. The two teams played in the Division II title game two years ago, with the Pythons winnng easily 35-6.
But while Pelham has been dominant with four straight titles (two in III, two in II), the Sabers will be playing in their third final in five years. They won the title in 2020 beating Plymouth. Sabers coach Robin Bowkett said he didn’t even realize that until he read it.
“It’s a testament to the kids and all the hard work they’ve put in, as well was the culture they’ve created over the years for the program,” Bowkett said. “And the coaches, who work hard and give up the time with their families.”
Pelham coach Justin Hufft, ironically, is a Souhegan alum and was an assistant there for 11 seasons before guiding Goffstown for nine seasons.
INTER-LAKES vs. CAMPBELL
There aren’t a lot of those tangled webs in this matchup. The Inter-Lakes/Moultonborough team fell to Campbell 34-12 back on Sept. 21, and it was the Lakers lone loss of the year. Defensively, they have given up just 20 regular season points and 21 in the playoffs since. They beat Monadnock 14-8 in their semi while Campbell pummeled Gilford 50-22.
“Inter-Lakes is a very talented football team with a lot of explosive athletes,” Costello said. “It’s polar opposites in terms of how we want to play the game. They want to spread you out and get their athletes in space, and we want to run the football. It should be fun.”
