MAT MASTERS: Local wrestlers win titles at Meet of Champions

The area had a combined boy-girl five state wrestling champions thanks to some great performances in the Meet of Champions at Pinkerton Academy on Saturday.
Nashua South’s Ben Byrne, seeded second at 150, bested No. 1 Pinkerton’s Carter Mayotte in a tight 9-6 decision to capture the state title. He won three other matches, including pinning Timberlane’s Colton Seuss in the semis.
South just missed sending a second wrestler to the New England Championships next week at the Providence (R.I.) Career and Technical Academy. Connor Whitman finished fourth at 165; the top three in each weight class qualify.
Alvirne Shawn Boudreau defended his title at 215 as he beat Pinkerton’s Anthony Carso with a major decision (9-0) in the finals.
Fellow Bronco Shayne Mackey pinned Timberlane’s Jason O’Brien in the finals at 165 to capture his title. The Broncos were the top local team finisher in seventh. Timberlane won the overall title with 180 points.
Hollis Brookline’s Caden Bruseo captured the title at 138, upending Salem’s Talen Walton with a technical fall (16-0) win. The Cavs will send two others to the New Englands as Victor Lomme was second at 113, bowing to Timberlane’s Ben Mann via an 18-2 tech fall (but he got two wins via pins en route to the finals). Also Jacob Critchfield at 157 took third.
Souhegan will send one to the New Englands, Jack Kaler at 126. Kaler finished third. Elsewhere for the Sabers, Gabe Holt (215) and Ben Smiley (138) took home fourths, while Chase Knuckles was sixth at 150.
Campbell’s Logan Allaire took second at 175; he pinned Spaulding’s Sawyer Goodwin in the semis but was in turn pinned by Londonderry’s David Pento, Jr. in the finals at 2:46.
Bishop Guertin has two wrestlers finish fifth, Dominic Stamp at 138 and James Algeo at 132.

GIRLS MEET OF CHAMPIONS
In the girls competition, Alvirne’s Jillian Boncore captured the title at 165 as she topped Bishop Guertin’s Ayla Saeturn in the finals with a pin at 244.
Souhegan’s Isabelle Brandt was second at 145, falling 7-4 to Spaulding’s Mackenzie Lacoss in the finals. Fellow Saber Ava Burbeen was third at 138.
Merrimack’s Avary Beradinella was second at 120, bowing to Manchester West’s Misel Medina via a 20-2 tech fall in the finals. She got a forfeit win and then a pin over Bedford’s Grace Kenna in the semis.
Milford’s Mya Coombs was second at 185; she was pinned in the finals at 5:01 by Concord’s Madison Beauregard.
Salem won the team title with 78 points; Souhegan was the top local finishing eighth (25.5).
