HS Tourney Roundup: Tough night as Alvirne, HB, Souhegan fall

It wasn’t a good night Wednesday on the tourney trail.

For example, the Alvirne High School boys basketball players were turning to officials, trying to wave off Manchester Memorial’s Joel Gomez’ buzzer beating putback, but to no avail in the Division I prelims.

And in the Division II girls basketball prelims, Hollis Brookline had an early 10-point lead but couldn’t hold it at Oyster River. And Souhegan had a tough time on the road at Pembroke.

Here’s the tough news:

NO. 10 MANCHESTER MEMORIAL 67, NO. 7 ALVIRNE 66

The Broncos got 16 each from Gavin Hall and Sean Chipfunde, and Hall had a go-ahead 3-pointer with 7.5 seconds left at a packed Steckevicz Gym.

But the Broncos couldn’t stop Gomez from the throwing the ball up from the left side after he got to Devin Lavallee’s missed runner and put it in as the buzzer sounded.

It was a crushing loss for the 13-6 Broncos, who trailed 34-31 at the half and by four going into the final period.

Bory Bory led Memorial (11-8) with 21 points while Lavallee had 20 and Gomez 12.

The Crusades will be at Portsmouth on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

DIVISION II PRELIMS

NO. 4 OYSTER RIVER 50, HOLLIS BROOKLINE 34

The Cavaliers led 16-6 after the first quarter and 21-16 at halftime, but tired in the third quarter during a Bobcat run as their season ends at 8-11.

Ana O’Donnell ad Arika Carlson had seven points each while Samantha Disco had six and Payton Dunn 5. Brooke Bouchard played well defensively.

“I’m proud of the grit of this young group,” Cavs coach Heidi Moore said.

The Bobcats will host No. 5 Pembroke on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

NO. 5 PEMBROKE 54, NO.12 SOUHEGAN 23

The Sabers fell behind 17-6 at the start and never recovered. Lanai Hickman had seven points and Zofie Rosenfeld added six.

Souhegan says good-bye to four seniors: Caroline Drum, Tess Jancar, Phoebe Faucher and Nevaya Mortimer.

“Overall, the girls had a great year,” Sabers coach Greg Cotreau said.
