NASHUA – In all things in life, you had better take advantage of second chances when you get them.

Especially in overtime of high school girls lacrosse.

Luckily for Bishop Guertin, Abby Lynn did just that, scoring with 19.8 seconds left in sudden death overtime to lift the Cards over Pinkerton, 10-9, in a back-and-forth thriller at Stellos Stadium.

Lynn, you see had an almost identical free possession chance over a minute earlier, and fired over the net. But she didn’t miss when the opportunity arose again, much to the chagrin of the Astros and goalie Sara DiClemente.

“I didn’t bring (the first attempt) in far enough, but I knew we’d get it back, I knew we’d run a better play, take a better shot,” Lynn, the Cardinals leading scorer, said. “I couldn’t done any of that without the coaches plays, ideas, and everyone else on the field working together. … I faked it, went under, placed the shot.”

Lynn ended up with four goals, one less than Pinkerton sharpshooter Delaney Summers, but she had the most important one. The win boost Guertin to 8-3 and snaps a two-game losing streak.

“I wanted the ball in Abby’s hands,” BG coach Callie Santos said. “One hundred percent. She was consistent on the 8-meter … She’s a great kid, she works hard.”

But when she missed earlier, it was hard to envision the Cards being able to get her another shot. However, Pinkerton’s second straight turnover in OT, this one caused by BG’s Lindsay Roedel, give Lynn another crack at it, and the Cards called time with 35.5 seconds left to make sure she got it.

“We got that second chance because of Lindsay,” Santos said. “Lindsay stepped up, she did an awesome job defensively. Our defense as a whole has been a rock for this entire season.”

The Astros (10-3) lost their second straight but saw their in-state win streak snapped at eight.

“We were just trying to run one of the sets we normally run and it just didn’t have the outcome that we wanted,” Astros coach Katie Bourque said of that last possession. “We went to some of the plays we like better, and we didn’t find the back of the net.”

And they had a chance, the final possession of regulation, but BG goaltender Emmerson Danish came up big, and the game went to OT. Danish (three saves) split time with fellow senior Maddy Eder-Linell (two stops).

The Astros started out fast, with goals by Francesca Doyle, Summers, and Sookie Folsom giving them a 3-0 lead just over three minutes in. But the Cards went on a six-goal tear with Lynn and Mariella Tomasello having two each and took a 6-3 lead into the locker room.

But the Astros came out strong in the second half led by Summers and by the time the third quarter ended, it was all knotted up at 7, and the fun had just begun. But Pinkerton never would get the lead after that first quarter.

“Callie made her adjustments (after it was 3-0), and we made our adjustments at halftime,” Bourque said. “It was a battle, two really good teams. … These are the ones you want. You want it close. You want exciting games. Hopefully next time we just come out on the other side.”

“They’re a great team,” Santos said. “They have a lot of really talented players; they were always going to fight no matter what the score was in the game. We learned a lot from our games last week and made sure we fought as hard as we possibly could.”

The teams kept trading goals in the fourth, in which Summers scored three of her five. She tied things with 3:11 left after Guertin’s Jordan Gaebel had given BG a 9-8 lead with 6:53 to play. Sarah Brunelle added two goals for BG while Camryn Leighton had a single tally. Francesca Doyle and Hannah Lisauskas ahd also had goals for Pinkerton, while DiClemente had a good night with eight saves.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Cards, who take on Portsmouth in a rematch of last year’s title bout on Thursday at Stellos.

“We’re just chipping away, focusing on one opponent at a time, and Pinkerton was the task right now,” Santos said. “And Portsmouth’s the task on Thursday.”

“Great rivalry,” Lynn said. “Great win.”
