Rivier Roundup: Tough soccer day; volleyball takes a split
It was a tough day Saturday for soccer for Rivier University and semi-tough for women’s volleyball, which did manage to win one out of two matches. Here are your Raider results:
MEN’S SOCCER
DEAN 2, RIVIER 1
Just before the half, Seamus Doherty would put his team on top with a cross off a free kick. Bryce King received the cross and headed the ball into the net to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 advantage and that’s how things ended up.
Raiders Cody Sicard of Salem sent a corner kick to the middle of the 18, giving Jason Harlow the chance to find the back of the net.
Dean would respond shortly after when Melvin Alves broke away from a Riv defender to knot the score up at 1.
Dominic Cunha had six saves for the Raiders. Alberto Gonzalez Del Rio had two saves for the Bulldogs, earning the win.
Rivier visits Colby-Sawyer Wednesday at 4 p.m.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
ANNA MARIA 4, RIVIER 0
In the first five minutes, DeAnna Baker scored off a free kick from Meghan Morrone to give the AMCATS a 1-0 lead. Baker recorded the following two goals of the half, earning the hat trick.
In the second half, Keannah Dunsmore put away the fourth goal for Anna Maria in the last five minutes of play, with a top-shelf finish from just outside the 18.
Julia Cafferty (Tewksbury, MA) had eight saves for the Raiders. Alice Yokabaskas had nine saves for the AMCATS to earn the shutout.
Rivier is at Regis Wednesday at 4 p.m.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
RAIDERS SPLIT
The Rivier women’s volleyball team split the day against two non-conference opponents in Amherst, Mass. The Raiders took down Gordon in three sets (27-25, 25-18, 25-20).and fell to Amherst in four (16-25, 25-22, 22-25, 19-25).
In the Gordon match, after a slow start, the Raiders kicked it into high gear in sets two and three. Riv finished with a .467 kill percentage in set two and a .333 in set three. Lily Sills led the way for the Raiders offense picking up a solid 12 kills. Avery Pollard racked up another 30 assists while adding four kills and a team-high eight digs.
The Raiders showed a lot of fight in their match with Amherst. After numerous rallies that last over 20 seconds each, Riv found themselves coming back to take the second set and even make the third set very close after being down 20-12. Sydney Racevicius (Woodbury, CT) had much to do with the Raiders successes after dropping 17 kills and a match-high 23 digs. Pollard left the gym tonight with a solid 61 assists combined between the two matches. She racked up 31 in this match alone and a season-high seven kills.
Rivier will be back in action Wednesday in the Muldoon when the Raiders start conference play against Colby-Sawyer at 7 p.m.
