Cal Ripken 12U All-Stars win again, 6-3 over Douglas, Mass.
The Nashua Cal Ripken 12U All-Stars are simply on a roll.
Not even Mother Nature could deter them as they got the second game of pool play in in the New England Regionals Sunday and prevalied over Douglas, Mass., 6-3.
Nashua will now take on Easton, Mass. in the third and final game of pool play looking to go undefeated. Game time at Freetown (Mass.) Central Park is 12:45 p.m. If Nashua wins it will get a bye in the next round, as elimination play begins, to the semifinals on Wednesday.
Nashua and opponent Douglas, MA traded runs in the first inning and Douglas broke the tie with a run in the third. While Nashua starting pitcher James Patierno struck out six and scattered three hits, a rising pitch count led Nashua to put in reliever Justin Sanossian in the fifth inning.
Sanossian also pitched well, striking out four and giving up one run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a single to right fielder Connor Serino. While Serino’s throw to the plate was extremely close, Nashua had to wait another batter to record the final out of the inning.
Down 3-1 in the top of the sixth, Nashua was down to its final three outs, having left eight runners on base to this point in the game. Leadoff batter Gavin Whigham walked and advanced to third on a throwing error. Garrett Schmidt then singled to score Whigham and Nik Levine’s clutch hit scored Schmidt a few plays later to tie the game.
Sanossian and Schmidt combined to shut down Douglas hitters in the bottom of the sixth and into two extra innings, providing Nashua enough time to wear down the opposition and secure the win in the eighth inning, 6-3. Nashua fans in attendance were on an emotional roller coaster as the wind and rain would come and go, along with lead changes and runners left on base.
Garrett Schmidt was awarded player of the game batting 2 for 4 and scoring both the tying run to force extra innings and the winning run in the eighth, along with retiring five straight batters.
The finals are Thursday at 5:30 p.m. also at Freetown.
Nashua is atop the “Pesky Pole” pool at 2-0, while West Hartford, Conn. is atop the “Green Monster” pool, also at 2-0.
