Multiple reports on Tuesday say that McDaniels, who was fired midway through the 2023 season as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, will be returning to Foxborough for his third stint as the Patriots offensive coordintor.
That was always a role McDaniels, who also had a failed head coaching stint in Denver, has seen his most success. He was first the Patriots coordinator in 2006-2008, and enjoyed the record offense the Patriots with Tom Brady and Randy Moss put together in 2007. Then, after being fired in Denver and then working with the then-St. Louis Rams, McDaniels returned in 2012 for a long stint before being lured away by the Raiders in the 2022 off-season to be their head coach. He lasted a year and a half.
McDaniels has reportedly offset language in his contract in which he receives his Raiders salary minus what he may be making from his new team. That means the Patriots don’t have to shell out much money to hire him, and reportedly the Raiders still owe him $10 million.
While fans have been clamoring for his return to develop quarterback Drake Maye after his rookie season, McDaniels never really was seen as closely connected to new Patriots coach Mike Vrabel, even though he was here as a player during McDaniels first coordinator stint.
But he has been a favorite of Patriots owner Robert Kraft. In February of 2018, after the Patriots lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, McDaniels was announced via press release as the new coach of the Indianapolis Colts. But the next day he reneged on the offer, presumably after Kraft convinced him to stay.
While most of McDaniels’ success with the Patriots came with Tom Brady as their quarterback, Mac Jones’ best season was his rookie year, McDaniels’ last year before leaving for the Raiders.
The Patriots since have had the tandem of Matt Patricia-Joe Judge, then Bill O’Brien, and finally this past season in the one-year head coaching tenure of Jerod Mayo, Alex Van Pelt.
He didn’t coach anywhere this past year, but reportedly interviewed for the Patriots OC position on Tuesday.
